about

Boltzmann Brain is a music collective based between the North Coast of Ireland and Belfast. We write, record, mix and perform original songs, as well as produce other artists. Our music combines several styles, some of which are, rock, punk, folk, post-rock, drum and bass, electronic music and Irish traditional music. Over the next twelve months we plan to release music in a steady stream and start playing gigs. We're very interested in collaborating with others on any aspect of music production and performance. Connect with us and watch this space.

A Boltzmann Brain is a hypothetical orderly fluctuation in a universe of disorder that happens to be conscious. The concept is named after Ludwig Boltzmann because he hypothesised that if the universe is truly infinite, and we observe only a portion of it, then the entire observable universe could be an orderly fluctuation in an overall infinity of chaos, just like an ordered pattern in the bubbles on a boiling pot.

We're inspired by the concept of gift economies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gift_economy): instead of explicitly exchanging our music for a given amount of currency, we'll freely give things that we think are valuable. If you find our music and/or what we're doing valuable, then we leave it up to you to return or create something that you think is valuable.

Philosophically and musically we hope to combine 60's psychedelia, 70's punk and 90's rave. All you need is love, do it your fucking self, and we're all part of the crowd.

Here are gifts we could give each other:

share

listen to our music and share it with others. Tell us your thoughts about lyrics, music, production, anything you'd like to share. In return we'll make an effort to share your music, art etc, and give you feedback.

busk

We will be busking quite regularly, if you are nearby please come down to see us, and join in. Busking is different from other forms of presenting music, in that it is inherently a gift; there is no way to stop someone consuming the music as they walk down the street. nor would most buskers want to, rather they freely give their music without the requirement of exchange from other people. Another important feature of busking is that children can experience excellent music. As many have pointed out, music is a unifying harmonious force that brings us together. Looking ahead this may become increasingly important. Inspiring children to dance is one of the most rewarding things about playing music in the street.

produce

If you're a musician in need of production or want to work with some new producers and live in or can travel to Belfast we could produce you, please get in touch.

crowdfund

If you think we're doing a good job, and you have a healthy income, then please consider supporting our patreon. It's a website that's invoking the old practice of patronage within our modern internet culture: you pledge to give a certain amount per piece of music we create. Listen to as much of our music as you want, or wait to hear a few releases if you want to see that the quality is what you expect. We intend the patreon to be a slow burner, and allow us to grow into a stronger collective over time, but it will take a while to build. More details on the website itself:
